Bears fans will take ugly win.
Not since Rex Grossman has a Bears Qb played like him and still won a game. Orton had two interceptions last night one late in the game which seemed to have all but sealed the Bears fate. But there was that defense of legends the Bears have been known for that showed up and got the ball back to give Orton another chance to win the game. You have to throw the records out when these two teams play considering one of the teams in the last three seasons has been out of playoff contention when they played like New Years Eve of 2006 when the Bears lost to the Packers supposedly because Rex Grossman had his mind on plans for his New Years Eve party after the game. And ofcourse this season when the last time the Packers won a game was November 16th against the Bears at Lambeau Field. They have now lost 5 games in a row including last night. With this victory the Bears and Vikings have the same record at 9-6. They still have to win versus the Texans on Sunday to help their own cause for getting into the playoffs for if they lose their season is done. But they still have to rely on the Vikings to lose at home against the Giants on Sunday in order for them to get into the playoffs by way of winning the division. The question is how long will the Giants play their starters since they have already clinched a playoff spot? The Bears have surpassed expectations this year by having a 9-6 record. In the preseason they were not expected to have more than 5 wins for the season. A big victory agains the Colts in Indy gave fans hope this would be a magical season. After losses to three of the best teams in the NFL, Carolina, Tampa and Atlanta three winnable games thier only hopes of making the post season rested in winning the division. With that still being the case Bears fans today are breathing a sigh of relief that as ugly as last nights game was including the weather the Bears not only defeated the hated Packers but kept their post season hopes alive. The city of Chicago is saying "we'll take it."

No Team Will Beat Bulls Record

Is any sports record still sacred and what will it take to break some of the biggest?
I once believed no one would break the homerun record held by Hank Aaron. I still do not believe that Barry Bonds should be recognized for breaking it. Though many say it's a different time, athletes are faster and stronger than they used to be but it still seems that one would have to cheat to break the records that have been held sacred for decades in eras where seasons were shorter ecpecially in baseball and in some cases ball parks bigger than they are now. Hank Aaron never hot over 40 homers in a single season while breaking the record once held by Babe Ruth while it took Barry Bonds needing a seaon where he hit over 70 homeruns and possible performance enhancing drugs to break Aarons record. Now he is villified for being a prick selfish and a cheater. Afterall the only thing Hank Aaron faced was threats on his life if he broke he record. While some records are meant to be broken three records that still stand that I believe will never be broken is Cal Ripkens Iron man streak for consecutive games played, Joe Dimaggios streak of 55 consecutive games played and the 72-10 regular season record held by the Chicago Bulls. So far the closes team to have come close to that record was the Dallas Mavericks who went 62-20 in 2006. The Boston Celtics have just two losses currently and the Lakers have 3 losses. What are the chances that either one of these teams can go without losing 2 or three more games to at least tie the 1995-1996 Bulls for the best record in basketball. And just like the 1972 Dolphins it isn't good enough to through an entire season undefeated in their case but a team also has to win the Championship. The Bulls in the 1995-96 season lost just three games in the playoffs and finished the season 87-13. In this era of the NBA what are the chances a team could even come close to what the Bulls had accomplished. As with many teams in the pass who have had notable success you have to have a team full of characters. Is there a 2000's Dennis Rodman known not just for his talent but for his antics? Which NBA player is willing to show up to a book signing in drag? Is there a 2000's Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan, two guys who need each other to win but stand head and shoulders above the league in talent? Kobe Bryant might fashion himself the next Michael Jordan but in the end I believe he will be regarded as a overrated schmuck and Lebron James could surpass Michael Jordan as possibly the best to play the game but he is going to have to win a few titles first. In my opinion no one will ever do what the Bulls did and that's the way it should be.

Peavy Would Have Been Nice For Cubs But Not The Answer!

Cubs Pull out of Peavy Trade but more pitching is not what they need.
Cubs pull out of trade For Jake Peavy because the Padres were asking too much. Cubs manager Lou Pinniella said he personally wasn't looking to add another arm to the already solid pitching staff and is looking for a left handed bat to add to the middle of the lineup. Several people have said that was what doomed th Cubs in the playoffs in 2008 where they were swept in the first round by a National League West foe in consecutive years. Lead off hitter Alfonso Soriano was quoted as saying the team was not built for a short series but he'd forgotten the Cubs had at one time during the season won nine consecutive series. Maybe he had forgotten this fact for he was injured for much of the season and many of the series were won while he was on the d.l. No matter what excuse they make or what changes the fron office makes to the team for the 2009 season what the need are guys who are able to remember what it was that had gotten them there in the first place after they had won a National League best 97 games, timely hitting and great pitching. It was as if they fell asleep and thinking the season would somehow go on after they were swept by the Dodgers. Somehow there would be another chance to redeem themselves. Alas that was not the case. They played as if the were under a lot of presusre. Pressure to end the 100 year world series droubt that most of them weren't even around to witness. And you know what they say about presure, it busts pipes, which might be the reason there was a rumor that someone on the Cubs team busted up some pipes in the visitor lockeroom of Dodgers Stadium. The Baseball season is one of the most grueling seasons in sports because of the amounts of games they play in a season. Many fans of the Cubs are a bit worn out and weary of what will happen in 2009 but there will still be another record year for attendance. Many will still take the wait and see attitude however as they were 2008 was the year. As long as there is baseball there will be fans showing up to historic Wrigley Field to cheer on their team but as my mother used to say, "I'll believe it when I see it."

Will Tebow Go the Way of Florida Quarterbacks?

Tim Tebow is the most recent of the quarterbacks from a school in the state of Florida who has won the Heisman on a program but will his career go the same way of other quarterbacks of from schools in that state.
The three biggest college football programs in the state of Florida are Miami, Florida and Florida state. It seems that kids who have played quarterback at those schools have not fared well in the NFL. The last one to have some success is former number 4 pick Rex Grossman of the Chicago Bears and formerly of the Florida Gators. Grossman helped lead the Bears to the Superbowl in 2006 but he is booed everytime he takes the field. Before that it was Bernie Kosar and Vinnie Testeverde both former Miami Hurricanes. Neither one of them got to a Super Bowl with their respective teams. The most recent quarterback from a Florida school before Tebow who won the Heisman was Chris Weinke who in his first season with the Carolina Panthers won just one game going 1-15. No one knows what has happened to him since. Ken Dorsey Won a national Championship with the Miami Hurricanes in 2002 and played for another one in 2003 losing that one to the Ohio State Buckeye and now he is a third stringer for the Cleveland Browns. Dorsey lost just one game in his career the national title game against Ohio State but has been a back up for the Forty Niners and the Cleveland Browns having played his first meaningful snaps this season because of injury. For Tebow his playing style might be a detriment to him. He is a tough runner and that's what most NFL coaches will be looking at him to do in the league not asking him to run an offense but pick up the tough yards in short yardage situation. He doesn't have much of an arm to run an offense in the NFL. While it will be a big deal that he may be only the second player to win the heisman twice since Archie Griffith of Ohio State and possibly be known as the greatest college player in history it will remain to be seen how his success translates to the pro game.

The Acc Is Tops!

This from a fan who is ecstatic that the "U" has once again cracked the top 25 in football for the first time in nearly two seasons.
I was recently asked which conference is the best conference in college football. While it probably comes down to who you play inside and outside of your conference the answer after checking on the current college football and standings and the top 25 rankings the answer I have come up with is the ACC! Below I have a break down of all the major college conferences for college football and while some teams have incredible records and a ranked higher than some the Acc is the most balance of all the conferences.
ACC has 12 teams. Big Ten has 11. Sec has 12 teams as does the Big 12.
The ACC has 8 teams over .500 (Miami, Maryland, Ga. Tech, Fsu, Wake, Bc, Unc, and Va. Tech.) with two teams at .500 (Virginia., and Clemson) and two under.500 (Duke, and NC State). So basically ten teams at .500 or better.
The Big ten has 7 teams over .500 (Psu, Osu, Msu, Iowa, Nu, Minn. And Wisconsin.) and 4 teams under .500 (Illinois, Purdue, Iu and Mich.) Basically 7 teams at .500 or better which is equal to the big 12.
As a matter of fact the Sec has the same amount of winning teams as the Acc but more teams under .500 than the Acc. The only thing that makes the Sec better is that they have two undefeated teams.
The thing that makes things somewhat even between the Big Ten and Acc is that the ACC has more 3 loss teams. While the ACC Championship game is not as hallowed as the other conferences that have conference championship games like the Big 12 and the SEC it is likely that the ACC will possibly have more bowl eligible teams than any other conference.

The "U" IS Back

After a few down years the University of Miami is on the rise. Taking advantage of a weak conference and a smothering defense the "canes beat Va. Tech sacking their quarterbacks 6 times including on the final play of the game with Va. Tech in a 4th and three situation and only needing a field goal to win the game. Miami has now won 5 games in a row after a 2-3 start to the season. Currently they are in first in the Costal Division of the ACC. Many former players including Edgerrin James who has a family member on the current 'Canes roster were honored in a ceremony of the ring of fame during the game last night and were treated to a victory which was a different outcome from last year when many former players showed up for the final game at the old orange bowl and Miami was shut out by a very good Virginia team. What a difference a year makes. This year Miami has a chance to paly for a conference title as well as a New Years day bowl. But let's not get ahead of ourselves they have two more games to play and both of them are on the road against Georgia Tech and Nc. State. Go 'Canes.

The Bulls Are In Trouble Without A Big Man

The Bulls don't just need any big man they need an Amare Stoudamire type big man. A man with speed and can pass to compliment Center Aaron Grey. Joakim Noah may be a hustler and hard worker but he is not a top quality big man/forward. Tyrus Thomas also is not a top quality forward though he has some nice dunks. Not to mention someone needs to tell him to stop shooting jumpshots. I realize that the Bulls have a new offense to learn but as they have been since the days of Scott Skiles they are hampered by the lack of a quality big man to compete in the weak eastern conference. As we have seen no one can stop the new Shaq in Dwight Howard. So instead of trying to stop him why not just out run him? The Bulls offense works well for the team they have with the passing and the speed with the talented Derrick Rose running that ofense. Hinrich is thriving in this offense as well as Ben Gordon. They do well when they are on the court at the same time as Rose and are scoring in the double digits. The only star who is struggling a bit in this offense is Luol Deng. Shots for him have been hard to go down for him though it's early in the season and I believe he will get hot and his struggles will be a thing of the past. He has changed his game from what it was before where he was shooting short range jump shots. He's shooting beyond the arc again and he is struggling with it. Once he gets comfortable he can help carry this team along with Nocioni who has played the power forward position for this team but he is undersized. No one can refute that Rose has helped to raise the quality of play on this team but they could possibly be undefeated right now before the upcoming West coast Circus trip out west. It's time for GM John Paxson to make some trades to bring in talent at the power forward position especially to complement Drew Gooden and Aaron Grey. If a move is not made soon the rest of the pack will run away from this team and they will find themselves around .500 and on the outside looking in when it comes to the playoffs at the end of the season.

SEC is good but Big 12 is hot!

The top 3 conferences in college football in my opinion are the Big 12, SEC, and Big Ten. Coming into the season people touted the SEC to be hands down the best conference in college football and the Big 12 a distant second. With some of the blowouts in the Big 12 over the weekend I would say that the Sec has been surpassed big time.
There are possibly more ranked teams in the conference with Texas being the number one team in the country though there is plenty more football left to play. Of all the major sports I enjoy college football the most, because of all the scoring. I hate some of the scores in other sports like baseball. I know people love to watch a pitchers duel and a 3-2 score. Not me. There are nine over paid players on the field and you cannot tell me that you can only score a total of 5 runs in a game. In the NFL some low scoring games can be exciting but you can only stand a 15-12 or 22-20 score for so long before you want to see your team run away with a game putting up 30 or more points on offense and dominating on defense. This weekend there was just one game in the big twelve where neither team scored more than 30 points and it was also the most competitive game in the conference. The Texas v.s. Oklahoma State score was 28-24. In the three other games in the Big 12 the winning team scored no less than 58 points. The school that got the worst of it was Colorado who didn't score a single point against Mizzou who put up 58 points. The highest amount of points was scored by Texas Tech who put up 63 points. Their next opponent is Texas who put up 45 on Oklahoma in the Red River Shootout and 56 on Missouri the following week.
In the SEC it was Florida putting up 63 on Kentucky and Georgia putting up 58 on LSU.
It's not a prerequisite to prove how good your team or conference is by how many blowouts there are in a given week or season but there was a time in college football when the margin of victory determined where your team played in the post season. If you were to look at the teams on the low side of the blow outs in the Big 12 this season more often than not they were in the top 25. It may be a conference without defense but I'd like to see what would happen if teams outside the Big 12 were to take on some of these teams from the Big 12. I belive the result would be the same. I am looking forward to the Texas, Texas Tech battle next weekend and it's possible that both teams could score over 50 points. It's possible that neither a Big Ten or SEC team will play for the national championhip this year though ofcourse the last time a Big 12 team played for the big game it was 2005, Texas against USC. The final point total was 79 points.

I am looking forward to the Texas, Texas Tech battle next weekend and it's possible that both teams could score over 50 points. It's possible that neither a Big Ten or SEC team will play for the national championhip this year though ofcourse the last time a Big 12 team played for the big game it was 2005, Texas against USC. The final point total was 79 points.

What Are The Bulls Going To Do?

What are the Bulls to do in this slipping time in Chicago?
The heralded Blackhawks are 0-2 after the first weekend on the NHL. The Bears are finding ways ways to lose games. Baseball is over on both sides of the city. What are the Bulls going to do for us?
Illinois has a top five recruiting class for the first time since the 2005 run to the Ncaa championship. What are these teams going to do to lift the spirit of the fans of the state. The Bears are beat up with injuries but somehow manage to keep themselves in ball games only to give it away at the end. Going from believeing the Bears wouldn't have a winning season now many believe they are underachieving. I've heard it said the Bears could be 6-0 right now. I wouldn't say that I would say 4-2.
If soccer was considered a major sport in the city there would be huge buzz for the Fire who has once again made the post season. There has not been much of a buzz for soccer since the World Cup in the nineties and the Chicago Sting of the old North American Soccer League.
With the #1 overall pick in Chicago native Derrick Rose has given the city a bit of hope to compete in a league that is now dominated by star point guards like former Illinois star Derron Williams of the Utah Jazz and Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets. And with first year coach Vinnie Del Negro whom I call Vinnie the Black dealing with a undersized team, has an uptempo philosphy much like the Phoenix Suns. The problem is that this team is overloaded with guards and neither of the 7 footers on the team considered a threat to any of the leagues big men like Orlando's Dwight Howard who could put both Aaron Gray and Joakim Noah through the basket because he is a man beast.
With the group the Bulls have they can win without the distractions of contracts as what affected Luol Deng and Ben Gordon and hopefully less of the selfishness that plagued the team last year. So after a month of super highs and super lows the city is looking for one of its teams to lift their spirits and put the month of October behind them, asking what are the Bulls going to do?

Not everything is always the Cubs fault, is it?
Yes it is over for the Cubs, busted pipes and all. Allegedly. It has been for at least a week now and the Cubs are getting blamed for everything going wrong even when it has nothing to do with Baseball. Saturday Night Live skits and the Daley Show tying them to politics. Or their fans to being morons for holding on for so long only to have them break your heart time and again. I was introduced to the Cub factor after the 88 world series where Kirk Gibson famous hit a walk off game winning home run for the Dodgers against the Oakland A's when the man could barely walk. He hit the home run off of Hall of Fame pitcher Dennis Eckersley. Yes that Dennis Eckersley that had previously pitched for the Cubs. He was a reliever for Oakland after stinking as a starter for the Cihicago Cubs. Over the years since then the theory had grown.
In almost every major league post season series after the Cubs have long been eliminated from post season contention or from the post season a game or series has been decided, won or lost by a former Cub player. Now you may say that could be the case for any team considering players are moving about constantly and any teams former player could be a factor. But with the recent woes of the Cubs it is safe to say that it shouldn't be ignored.
Right now the Dodgers and Phillies have several former Cubs on their roster from short timers like Juan Pierre and Nomar Garciaparra to players that got their first big league starts with the Cubs like Jamie Moyer and Greg Maddux. Also it doesn't have to be on the field of play for them to earn their infamy. A couple of names mentioned or busted for steroid use include Neifi Perez and Sammy Sosa and Rafael Palmeiro. Sosa, a part of the duo credited for bringing baseball back to popularity with his historic home run battles with Mark Mcguire though Mc Guire was busted and Sosa was just accused by most of baseball and his fans in Chicago. Not to mention the corked bat incident where he supposedly grabbed the wrong bat.
And Rafael Palmeiro who pointed a finger at Congress and swore he had never used steroids when it came out that he had allegedly tested positive just days before a celebration for his milestone of hitting 500 homers and 3000 hits.
Basically they find ways to be the butt of jokes no matter the occasion they will always fit in somewhere.

Bears, Sox, and Bulls Blackhawks Town

A quick recap of things going on in Chicago... minus the Cubs.
Bears are in first place of the NFC North by themselves, The White Sox are still in the playoffs and the Bulls are getting ready to kick off with much excitement about their first round draft pick in Derrick Rose. There is even a huge buzz for the Blackhawks. Notice that the Cubs have not been mentioned. For many years this was a Cubs town even though there are two baseball teams in Chicago until football and basketball seasons start and the baseball divisions go away. A Cubs town no matter how many times the Cubs could choke in the post season. But mark my words the Cubs will be nothng but a whisper in the city next baseball season with the amount of defections south.
But the Bears had their most complete victory so far this season against a Lions team that beat the Bears twice last season including getting outscored by 30 points in the fourth quarter of one game last season at Soldier field. The Black hawks have been non existent in Chicago with many people going to more Chicago Wolves games. The Wolves are the minor league team in Chicago who have made the playoffs every season since their inception and have won two league chmpionships since 1994 the year of their inception. The beauty of a multi sport town is that if one or two let you down like the Cubs and the jury is still out on he Bulls you still have a few teams to fall back on.
While I may not be a hockey fan I might be sporting a Blackhawks sweater this year. The Bears will get my full attenion until he nba season tips off. And if all of these teams disappoint then there are the college sports.
Illinois won for the first time in years at Michigan setting a new record at the Big House in yardage with 431 in a 45-20 victory. Believed to be headed to another post season bowl game perhaps not the Rose Bowl like last year but possibly still a new years day game. Look at northwestern ranked 22nd and undefeated after beating Iowa on the road last weekend. While I do believe that Penn State will win the Big Ten conference NU and Illinois will certainly have something to say in the outcome. While those are not Chicago sports it gives fans from the state of Illinois something to cheer for without as big a let down like the teams in Chicago.

Last One To Leave Turn Out The Lights

The Cubs made a quick appearance in the playoffs this year.
That is the mood in Wrigleyville on Monday for those who have not already migrated to the southside to jump on the White Sox band wagon. I on the other hand am a glutton for punishment and will probably buy tickets next year though have no hopes of seeing a world series winner of the Cubs in my lifetime. I just love baseball and I don't know how to cheer for another team. I've heard nearly every joke ever about the Cubs. My favorite, C.U.B.S., for "Completely Useless By September."
For once there is no one yelling about a curse finally we're going to blame the players on the field for choking once again. Choke, that's the only way to put it. Now all that happens is that the die harders will be able to buy tickets because we'll probably go through a period of no sell outs until it actually happens. And I mean it actually happens because until the season ends with the Cubs as baseball champions no one will care. 2003 actually hurt more for me than this year. Because we had proven that we belonged. The Marlins a better team that year had come into Chicago and had been shut down. That's why after losing the first game to the Dodgers I didn't seat it because we'd lost game on to the Marlins in '03. No Bartman this year. No black cats no nothing but choking.
So many of us on the northside cheer for Ernie Banks and Ron Santo and Andre Dawson and Ryne Sandberg but all of those players except Dawson was involved in some horrific collapse in their careers so they have to watch the different Cub teams try to win it for them. Now what will Ron Santo do in the future? Will he wear his heart on his sleeve like he has for the past few years I listened to his absentmidedness on the radio and thought it was kind of funny but loved the fact he wore his heart on his sleeve for this team he once starred for but he was involved with one of the biggest collapse in team history in 1969 and he was in the on deck circle when the black cat ran past him and the Cubs went on to lose a huge lead over the mets and watch the Mets win the world series that year. The year of the Amazin's.
Perhaps it'll be Santo who will turn off the lights in Wrigleyville. It would only be appropriate. Frankly what happens now I don't really care. I'm numb to the fact that another post season I have to watch another team go all the way. Should I pull for Tampa Bay who have surprised everyone and very well could have been the Cubs opponent in the big series. I guess the problem is that people had the nerve to believe the Cubs would go all the way no question and as the saying goes this is why they play the games.
Now that we've got the first 100 years out of the way let's see what the next 100 brings. Many people forget that the Cubs were once like the Yankees of the early days of baseball. The Cubs won at least 100 games twice and went to ten world series between 1900 and 1945. The Cubs are the second winningest team in baseball and are unlike many other teams in that they've been fairly consistent over the decades of making the playoffs especially recently.
The Milwaukee Brewers had not been to the post season since the early 80's and who can remember the last time the Kansas City Royals made the post season. Baseball will still go on and there will be winners and losers and this won't be the last time the Cubs make the post season and maybe not the last time they choke. It's just a lot less people will care.
Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright;
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,
And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout;
But there is no joy in Wrigleyville - the mighty Cubs have struck out.

Don't Get Too Excited Chicago Fans!

Though the Bears 2 and 2 they are tied with the Green Bay Packers for first place in the division. The Monsters of the Midway won another game Sunday night on paper they were not supposed to. Like the Indianapolis game most people in Chicago did not believe the Bears could handle Peyton Manning and Joseph Addai or Marvin Harrison on offense and Bob Sanders or Dwight Freeney on defense.
One of the Eagles biggest weapons in Brian Westbrook was on the sidelines with an injury but the Eagles still had weapons to work with in Correll Buckhalter and Desean Jackson and that defense is no slouch either.
The Bears had some injuries of their own like Defensive tackle Tommie Harris and Windy City Flyer Devine Hester was far from 100% for this game. But the Bears started fast with three first half touchdowns and the defense was stout as usual stopping Buckhalter on a fourth and goal when Alex Brown came around the end and grabbed ahold of Buckhalter keeping him out of the end zone.
The Bears lost to two teams they should have beaten in Carolina and Tampa Bay who beat the Packers on Sunday assuring a first place tie with the Bears. In both games the Bears had double digit leads only to relinquish it and make those teams look better than they really are. The question in the upcoming weeks is which team is going to show up? But does it really matter when they could conceivably go 8 and 8 or 9 and 7 and win the terrible NFC North.

Bears Suck!

Before the NFL preseason started a friend of mine made the prediction the Bears record for the 2008-09 season would be 6-10. I thought it ridiculous as the Bears had done what the Green Bay Packers did the year before, finish up by finishing the season on a wining note though missing the playoffs. With a final record for the 2007-08 season of 7-9 being the only team to beat the Packers twice last year.
The defense looked like they would be prominent this season I was sure the Bears would start the season as well as they'd finished but when preseason started the Bears defense looked terrible but the offense looked decent and my hope that they would go 8-8 had me believeing they would be more like 4-12. Well now that we're in week three and having blown two games in which they had a lead that prediction looks like it might come to fruition. There is no such thing as moral victories in sports either you win or you lose.
As the Bears have shown they can play well in the first half of games and then fall asleep when they have the lead. That is the case on both offense and defense. The defense helps the offense to a lead which has been 14 points in the games against Carolina on the road and in their home opener at Soldiers Field against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The defense then expects the offense to take over and chew up some time with a huge time of posession and they haven't been able to do that. As my friend had pointed out the Bears have an aging offnsive line a rookie runningback and a quarterback who is supposed to manage the game more than make plays to win it. He forgot an offensive coordinator in Ron Turner who has no idea how to run an NFL offense.
A guy who would pass on running downs and run on passing downs. A ton of boos rained down on Soldier's Field when the Bears choked away the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers allowing a former quarterback to run the two minute offense marching them down the field for a game tying score not to mention getting called for stupid penalties that ended up costing them the game.
Bears players drafted in the past three seasons have barely seen the field and have been cut from the team for a number of reasons like Tank Johnson who after having his house raided for possessing guns without permits and then watching his friend get murdered in a Chicago area night club. From the 2005 draft class the Bears have just one player on the roster remaining, Quarterback Kyle Orton. Most of the Bears players who we're in the Super bowl in 2006 including Tank Johnson are either with other teams out of football, Cedric Benson, Mark Bradley, or are on the Bench, Rex Grossman.
While no one is calling for Head Coach Lovie Smith to be fired fans want to see a team that can hold onto the ball and can hold a lead or we're in for another long season with the tough Philadelphia Eagles coming up on Sunday night.

While no one is calling for Head Coach Lovie Smith to be fired fans want to see a team that can hold onto the ball and can hold a lead or we're in for another long season with the tough Philadelphia Eagles coming up on Sunday night.

Godfrey Logan talks about a potential North vs. South World Series. No, not like the Abe Lincoln days, he's talkin' (White) Sox vs. Cubs in a battle for the ages.
Cubs V.S. Sox In The World Series

It's been many years since the Cubs and White Sox were in first place this late in the season and not since 1906 since the two teams played each other in the World Series. The White Sox won that one 4 games to 2.
With the Bears at 1-2 and no one in the city knowing what to expect from the Bulls and Blackhawks the Chicago has a chance to be the center of the baseball world this October. What would be called the Red Line series it could have an effect that cannot be found in New York, California or Texas, Chicago could collapse in on itself from the from the history surrounding the Cubs world series drout and the sheer dislike of the fans on both sides of the city.
While the Sox play in the secod weakest division in the American league, the American league central and the Cubs play in one of the better divisions in the National league central, the National league remains the weaker of the two leagues with the Aerican league winning the All star game and earning home field advantage in the World Series. But with a weak pitching staff there's no way the White Sox get past Anaheim or Tampa Bay. The fact they have held onto forst place in their division for most of the season means they have done something right like leading all of baseball in homeruns.
I would love to see the Cubs and Sox in an all Chicago World Series and it would show what I've known all along, the Cubs are the best in the city. The Cubs have a deeper team and better pitching staff than most teams in baseball and the best record in the National league but as the 2006 champs the St. Louis Cardinals have shown that doesn't guarantee anything in the post season.

What Has Illinois Told Me About Growth?

What has the Illinois Fighting Illini told me about their growth from last year? As of now the defense gives up big plays and the offense is missing a good running back to complement Quarterback Juice Williams.
Can they repeat the success of 2007 when they played in the Rose Bowl against USC? I don't think so. Rashard Mendenhall is off to the NFL and both of the Illini's wins are against Eastern Illinois a 1AA school and University of Louisiana from the unheralded Sun Belt conference. Without a good running back all of the offensive decisions rest on the shoulders of Juice Williams who is not a true quarterback. He's a very good athlete but if he has a future in pro football it would not be as a qb but as a wide receiver.
He is what I'd call a system quarterback where his success comes from the system the team runs and outside of the spread offense he could never make it as an under the center drop back type of quarterback in the NFL. If Illinois is to get anywhere this year even with the great recruiting classes they've had since Ron Zook has been in Champaign they won't do it without a running back like Mendenhall who could keep a drive going through Williams mistakes.
As much as Zook tries to keep Williams from having to be in tough situations where he has to throw the ball though he's has done ok so far this season with multiple touchdown passes in their first game against Missouri, the defense gave up 45 points in that game. Without a good running game or the type of defense that carried them to a second place finish in the Big Ten in 2007 Illinois is likely to finsh in the middle of the pack in the Big Ten in 2008.

Are the Bears looking super again? That defense sure thinks so.

Bears Defense looks like Defense of Superbowl Year.
But the offense looked as inept as the second half of that season the 2006-2007 season this past Sunday against the Carolina Panthers. That year Rex Grossman was the quarterback that year who started the season with a plus 100 quarterback rating and finished the year with his rating in the 30's or 40’s.
This year there many differences on offense including a different quarterback and running back but the result is the same with the defense having to once again do much of the scoring.
Two big turnovers by second year tight end out of Miami Greg Olsen and no one is willing to say that it was those two turnovers that cost the Bears the game. They took away momentum from the Bears who at one point in the game had built up a fourteen point lead.
The special teams blocked a punt on the Panthers first possession of the game to set up the bears first touchdown of the game. Another Panther turnover, an interception set up the Bears second touchdown giving them a 17-3 lead.
The Bears defense forced four false start penalties on their first drive but the team was penalized themselves a number of times for blocking in the back on punt returns.
Going into the game they were almost guaranteed a win versus a team that had lost four in a row at home after starting the season on the road. The Bears defense looks good but the offense has a lot of catching up to do.

Hurricane Ike Good For Cubs!

With a couple pitching gems against the Astros are the Cubs really saying, "Home sweet, Milwaukee?"
After playing two games in Milwaukee sweeping both games with a no hitter by pitcher Carlos Zambrano and a one hitter by Ted Lilly the Cubs have at least an 8 game lead in the division, it can be said that Hurricane Ike was “very very good” for the Cubs taking a cue from former Cub Sammy Sosa. Before the storm with their offense in the tank all of the pressure had been put on the pitching staff to carry them. While a series win is a series win, 2 of 3 over St. Louis in Missouri and winning series has been their motto since the all star break, Cub nation has been questioning keeping Derrick Lee in the three spot. Sweet Lou has proven what Dusty Baker had proven before him as a manager of the Cubs, regardless of your managing reputation and history, stars will always get star treatment. Considering the fact that Lee leads the national league if not all of baseball in grounding into double plays he remains in the three spot. While he did hit a homerun in Mondays game against the Astros he still has less homeruns than rookie catcher Giovanni Soto finally hitting the 20 homerun plateau on Monday. For a month or more Lee didn’t have an extra base hit and his batting average dipped below .300. Another star getting star treatment but frustrates the hell out of Cub fans is lead off hitter Alfonso Soriano. He’s proved in the past two seasons that he isn’t willing to try hitting in another spot in the lineup so by default he remains in the top slot where he has produced but has never seen a pitch he didn’t like. He’s gone away from what worked for him when he came off his second stint on the dl just after the all star break when he started the second half red hot. What maybe happening is these two stars have been pressing while losing nine out of ten games including a sweep at Wrigley by the same Astros they swept the two game series from. It is said that the playoffs are a whole different story from the regular season but Cub nation would rather see positives from their stars going into the post season. For the last two seasons it has been the role players that have carried the team. The lower half of the lineup while the top of the lineup has had its struggles. There is less pressure going into this post season than last year when the Cubs were swept by Arizona in the first round. Some would say how can that be when a team has not won a World Series in nearly 100 years. But when your number to win the division is down to single digits a team can relax a bit before the playoffs start while other teams are killing themselves just to make it. While Cub fans see some positives in the two game sweep of the Astros they want their stars to show they can be the strength of this team without relying on the pitching staff to do all the work.
